A note from Connor MacIvor · Week three

The view from the ground floor

A personal note on helping, evidence and reclaiming your attention.

I have been calling this the view from the ground floor. It is where a worker, a customer and a small business owner meet a change before anyone can measure it in a keynote. AI may make some work easier and open useful opportunities. It may also move a mistake or a cost onto someone with less power to correct it. I want this paper to keep asking who gets the benefit, who bears the transition and what we can verify today.

I have described a transition moonshot. That is a direction for inquiry, not a prediction that any one technology will produce a shorter workweek or a better income. We should test claims against actual jobs, pay, customer outcomes and the cost of fixing errors. A good idea survives the question, 'What happens at the ground floor?' An attractive promise that cannot answer it needs more work.

The Honor Daily remains a newspaper, with real estate, AI, health, world affairs and things worth wondering about. Sources, dates, corrections and disagreements belong beside the story. I also represent sellers and help businesses put AI to work; those are my commercial interests, and our house invitations are marked as such. If an article helps you frame a decision, use it. If you want to discuss a business workflow or seller representation, BookWithHonor.com is where you can book time with me. Thank you for reading and for holding this paper to its own standard.

Kyiv says the missiles came without warning; the reason remains disputed

Statements and AP update October 13, late Tuesday Kyiv

This morning’s edition described a proposed reciprocal pause in strikes on energy facilities. By late Tuesday in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had added a different concern: Ukraine received no early warning from unspecified partners before five ballistic missiles struck the capital, he said. AP reported that one Ukrainian official described a warning failure and allowed that conditions such as weather might explain it. President Trump said US intelligence sharing continued. The public record here does not establish an intentional American cutoff, which partner was expected to warn, or what a warning would have prevented.

AP also reported later attacks targeting Kyiv energy systems. Zelenskyy said Ukraine had paused strikes on Russian oil facilities for two days, but that claim is not a monitored truce; Russia had not publicly confirmed common energy-ceasefire terms in the material checked. Advocates of a pause see civilian protection as urgent. Ukraine’s concern is that one-sided restraint removes leverage while attacks continue. A joint start time, agreed targets, independent strike log and documented warning protocol would change the assessment. Neither diplomatic language nor the absence of a warning proves a hidden motive.

Closing-window start dates (inclusive): 7-day 2026-10-06; 30-day 2026-09-13; longer view 2026-04-10. Counts run through the source snapshot. These are source UTC calendar-date windows, not exact rolling-hour periods. Closing windows overlap; do not add them.

What the split means for a real decision

For a seller

Single-family homes show 514 active listings against 155 recent closings: 3.3 months of supply. That is tighter than the condo segment. Compare your home with today’s same-type, same-price alternatives before choosing an asking price; this ratio does not prove a bidding war.

For a buyer

Condos show 209 active listings against 33 closings: 6.3 months of supply. That means more listed choice per recent sale than single-family homes, not an automatic discount. Check HOA costs, financing, condition and property-level competition before making an offer.

What the labels mean

Seller-leaning: less available supply relative to completed sales. Buyer-leaning: more supply relative to sales. Balanced: the middle range. These describe relative negotiating conditions, not a guarantee for any home.

This paper uses a declared rule of thumb: below 4 months is seller-leaning; 4–6 is balanced; above 6 is buyer-leaning. We classify the unrounded number and withhold a label below 10 closings in the 30-day window. Local price tier, condition, location, HOA costs and financing can change the picture.

Absorption, without the jargon

30-day absorption = closed sales ÷ current active listings × 100. It compares recent completed sales with today’s inventory. It is not the percentage of those exact active homes that sold.

Months of supply = current active listings ÷ 30-day closed sales. It approximates how long today’s inventory would last at that sales pace, assuming no new listings. Coming-soon, active-under-contract and pending homes are kept separate and excluded from that numerator. No closings means the ratio is unavailable, not zero.

Feed-defined SCV residential market: Valencia, Saugus, Canyon Country, Newhall, Castaic, Stevenson Ranch, Santa Clarita, Acton and Agua Dulce. Internet-displayable MLS records only; this is not every property or private sale in the valley. “Other / unclassified” keeps the totals reconciled. A zero means the successful source query found none; an unavailable query must never become zero. Source updates and late-entered closings can revise counts. The 186-day column adds context; it does not drive today’s label.

Local data · Defined supply measure

The valley average hides three different markets.

October 13, 2026 · 16:00 PDT

The feed reports 860 active residential listings and 10 coming soon. There were 210 closed sales in its 30-day reporting window. The combined supply ratio is 4.10 months, but that headline alone misses the differences.

Single-family homes: 514 active, 155 closed in the source 30-day window, 3.3 months of supply; Condos: 209 active, 33 closed in the source 30-day window, 6.3 months of supply; Townhomes: 122 active, 19 closed in the source 30-day window, 6.4 months of supply.

Read the table above before applying a valley-wide label to a particular property. The 186-day counts provide a longer view; they do not set the label in this edition. These are MLS-derived displayable listing counts, not a complete census of private sales or every local property.

Official incident update

The Bike Fire has a new official timestamp, but no new published acreage

CAL FIRE October 13, 08:11 PDT

At the morning cutoff, the official update list still ended on October 11. CAL FIRE has since posted October 13 updates, including an 08:11 PDT incident record. It still gives 172 acres and 68% containment, labels the incident active and says the cause is under investigation. That is a real change in reporting time, without a changed acreage or containment figure. It does not certify that all nearby roads, homes or air are safe.

For a showing, inspection or move, check the exact address against the current official evacuation map and county instructions, then confirm access with people on the ground. A listing status cannot answer those questions. We have no verified count of damaged homes, canceled escrows or fire-driven insurance changes. A new official zone order or field update would change this desk; speculation based on the wider SCV inventory would not.

A repaired local count is fresher; the national rate is still last Thursday’s

SCV source October 13, 15:50 PDT; Freddie Mac October 8

The source timestamp on the complete local response is 15:50 PDT. Morning readers saw a valid 06:30 snapshot because a subsequent 06:40 response omitted several counts; missing fields were not converted to zeros. Today’s fresh table below separates active, coming soon, under contract, pending and closings for single-family homes, condos, townhomes and other residences. Its overlapping 7-, 30- and 186-day windows are not additive. Displayable records across nine defined cities are useful for comparisons, but are not every local sale. This is an owned property-site feed, and the publisher has a commercial interest.

Freddie Mac’s latest weekly 30-year average was 7.40% on October 8, versus 7.28% the preceding week. No newer regular survey was available at this afternoon check. A buyer’s actual offer depends on credit, product, points, fees and lock timing. Compare written lender estimates with identical assumptions. The property type rows and their sample sizes are more informative than a single valley-wide “hot market” label.

Official proceeding · Outcome limited

The UK model-safety hearing happened; its questions are not law

Parliamentlive October 13, 14:06–17:16 London

The morning edition described the committee’s scheduled questions about outside model testing, incident reporting and who can stop a risky deployment. Parliamentlive now confirms that the sitting took place, beginning at 14:06 and ending at 17:16 London time. A former-researcher panel was followed by AI-company witnesses and then government and AI Security Institute witnesses. We have not reviewed a full transcript or evaluated every exchange. This proceeding gathered evidence; it did not itself enact a release veto, incident statute or mandatory pre-release access regime.

Worth your attention: whether written testimony or later committee findings specify an actual tester’s access, incident thresholds, authority and timetable. Skip it: vendor or critic summaries that turn a hearing question into an implemented policy. Model makers have commercial and reputational interests; regulators and researchers have institutional interests. Those are disclosed roles, not proof that a particular witness misled the committee. For the proposed ground-floor transition series, the practical test remains who catches, repairs and pays for an AI error after a worker inherits it.

Randomized short trial · Older context

The five-day fasting trial cannot settle a longevity claim

Study published June 1; no new trial verified October 13

No material new randomized finding in fasting, carnivore eating, TRT or longevity was verified between the morning and afternoon checks. The June study remains useful context: 64 healthy adults were randomized to a roughly 600-calorie modified ketogenic five-day intervention or usual diet. The measured horizon was short. Its primary blood-pressure comparison was not significant at the end of fasting, while weight and some later markers changed. It did not compare a water-only multi-day fast against an equally reduced-calorie diet, recruit patients with diverse conditions or measure lifespan. Full funding and conflict details were not independently audited in this run.

Observational associations, personal anecdotes and product claims should not be promoted to randomized proof. Prolonged fasting can create dehydration, electrolyte and medication problems; restrictive carnivore eating can limit food variety; testosterone treatment needs clinical indication and monitoring under current labeling. None has a verified human lifespan benefit from this afternoon’s evidence. A larger preregistered trial with appropriate comparator, safety capture and durable outcomes would move this verdict. This is an evidence update, not a regimen or dosing suggestion.

“US intelligence was deliberately cut off” goes beyond the record

October 13 evidence check

The supported part is narrow: Ukraine’s president says it received no early warning from unspecified partners before the attack. The stronger allegation that Washington deliberately switched off intelligence is unresolved by the material checked. AP reports an anonymous Ukrainian official discussing failure and possible conditions such as weather; Trump says sharing continues. These accounts need not describe the same intelligence product or minute-by-minute sequence. A dated transmission log, named partner response and technical weather or detection record could change the verdict. Until then, the headline should describe the absence of warning as Zelenskyy’s reported claim, not a proven motive or policy decision.

A local Reddit thread puts costs beside listing prices

Thread opened October 13; discussion began about October 7

In a locally focused Reddit thread, commenters describe frustration with monthly payments and point to mortgage rates, homeowners-association charges and insurance. One recent comment mentions a rate above 7%. We cannot verify commenter identities, loan terms, residence or whether the cited sales closed. Votes and visible replies are shaped by who joined and what the platform displayed. The thread is useful as a question generator: compare total monthly cost and actual closed-sale records, then ask which component changed. It is not evidence that all local buyers think alike. We could not obtain a reliable X sample during this edition.

Antarctic sea ice reached a winter peak with an older date than the headline

NASA article October 12; estimated peak September 14

NASA Earth Observatory’s October 12 account puts the likely Antarctic winter sea-ice maximum on September 14 at 17.59 million square kilometers. It describes this as the third-lowest winter maximum in a satellite series beginning in 1978. Passive-microwave instruments can observe through clouds; the extent metric counts grid cells above a 15% sea-ice concentration threshold. That makes the number a defined measurement, not every square kilometer of solid ice. The September peak and October publication date are separate clocks.

A useful mental model is to pair every number with its measurement rule and observation date. A dramatic rank without those two details can mislead. If you have twenty seconds, look at one number you saw today and ask, “What was counted, and when?” Then return to the promise you meant to finish. Curiosity can sharpen a question without becoming another item on the backlog.

Let one verified video answer a real seller question

Proposal October 13

The owned assets already exist: a daily paper, seller-facing video and a booking calendar. The customer problem is a seller who sees a market statistic but cannot connect it to their home, timing or likely net. Choose one already public, fully reviewed clip that explains a concrete question, add a text summary and link beside the market table, and ask five real sellers whether it helped them decide what to ask next. Count consult requests or useful objections, not views alone. If none of five asks for a next step, stop and revise the explanation before making more media.

This displaces a generic launch pitch and uses no new platform. The publisher could gain a client; that commercial interest should be visible next to the editorial evidence. A Loom upload or a video title is not proof of clean audio, source accuracy, permission or signed-out playback. Today’s queue did not clear those checks, so this remains a small validation plan, not a claimed live video feature.

Close the evidence loop on the existing issue

October 13 afternoon

Today’s concrete finish is to verify this dated issue page and then its RSS item before calling the release complete. Email delivery requires a separate HonorElevate campaign receipt after the send window; a scheduled label alone is insufficient. For your own project, select one existing customer-facing promise and test the link or deliverable as the customer would. If it works, save the date and receipt. If it fails, assign one owner and the exact fix. Closing that loop is more valuable than announcing another start.

Inside the newsroom

Compared with No. 034: the Bike Fire update list gained October 13 records without new acreage or containment figures; a complete 15:50 PDT SCV aggregate replaces the morning partial-refresh warning; the UK hearing occurred, but its testimony has not been fully audited. The Ukraine warning dispute adds an allegation and a counterstatement, not proof of deliberate US action. No material new India voter-roll adjudication was verified.

The four news desks were checked. The health section has no material new clinical result since morning; its June randomized trial is clearly older context. The Freddie Mac survey is dated October 8. A NASA story published October 12 describes a September 14 observation.

One accessible Reddit thread is a self-selected discussion, not representative sentiment. X discussion was not reliably accessible. The video queue offered new Loom titles, but no asset cleared content, privacy and signed-out playback checks by cutoff, so the public issue embeds none.

Source links identify original or direct reporting where accessible. Statements, reported claims, data and publisher analysis are separated; known commercial interests are disclosed without attributing unproven motives.

Corrections and clarifications

No factual correction to No. 034 was found in this check. Its statement that CAL FIRE had no newer official update at the 06:30 morning cutoff was accurate then; October 13 07:44 and 08:11 PDT updates supersede its fire timestamp. No. 034 retains its published 06:47 PT Finish Line wording correction.
